Guests at Ceylon Bungalows simply pass through our garden gate and find themselves on a secluded, breathtaking beach. Morning and early evening walks in either direction are fun and rewarding (you can go for miles). Naturally, swimming and body surfing in the warm Indian Ocean are a must, although at certain times the current can be strong. Our large pool allows for both training and fun (with a special shallow area for babies and children). You can also have a game of tennis in the court within the property
We strongly recommend a day trip to Galle, the capital city of Southern Sri Lanka. The Galle Fort is a world heritage site and the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European settlers. Prominent landmarks include the natural harbor, the National Maritime Museum, St. Mary’s Cathedral founded by Jesuit priests and one of the main Shiva temples in Sri Lanka. Galle is also great for shopping: there are numerous Jewellery shops selling precious and semi-precious stones; Colombo outlet stores such as Barefoot and wonderful antique shops. There are also fine restaurants for lunch or dinner.
Renowned for its beach, reef and coral, Hikkaduwa is also the first stop for any surfer on the South West Coast (the town a well-known international destination for board-surfing). Glass bottom boats take visitors out for a unique view of the coral reef. Little shacks line the beach and hippy-esque shops are dotted along the roadside. So, if you are in need of an updated beach wardrobe, this is the place (dresses can be copied using antique saris and board shorts are everywhere). Naturally with so many surfers,
Hikkaduwa offers a vibrant night life
Unawatuna is the quiet beach that serves Galle; it is well protected and is comparatively safe for swimming throughout the year. There are many small beach restaurants dotted along this pretty crescent shaped beach.Off the coast of Unawatuna, beneath the Indian Ocean, lies a number of coral reefs, shipwrecks, and a great variety of fish and turtles. There is a choice of scuba diving schools who take divers out into the warm, clear Indian Ocean swimming among fluorescent fish, brightly coloured star fish and sea cucumbers. There are ship wrecks to explore too.
